I was driving by
the headquarters of the social media giant ‘Facebook’ in the city of Menlo
Park, California. I was startled to see the huge Facebook Headquarters. Like
most nations of the world, Pakistani are also acutely tangled in the social
media life style. Young generation spends most of the day & night writing their
‘status’ on timelines, sharing anything that interests them, liking own and
others’ post and pictures and commenting on anything or everything they see on
their ‘wall’. Have ever this thought happened to our youth that by their
activity on social media, who is making money, big money I mean. Let’s take a
peek in the history and try explode the bubble.
On February 4, 2004, Facebook
was co-founded by a young boy Mark Elliot Zuckerberg, a Harvard University
dropout. He along with his colleagues started this social media portal in his
university and by the year 2007 he was already a billionaire at the age of 23
years. Zuckerberg placed first on the list of the “Most influential Jews in the
World” by the Jerusalem Post. Now 31 years old, his net wealth is around 38 Billion
US Dollars. Thanks to almost every boy & every girl of the world including
millions of Pakistani.
While there are many great
aspects of having a boundless social media, and the contribution of Mark
Zuckerberg in this regard is indeed remarkable. It is correct to say that the
idea of Zuckerberg to spread social media services around the world was unique
and by far the most magnetic one. But, here in this article I will mostly focus
on the Pakistani users’ general behavior while using the Social Media, be it
Facebook or anything else.
Have you ever wondered about how
Facebook earns? If you are thinking that they earn through advertisement that
you see on you Facebook Screen’s sidebars, then you are not entirely correct. They
earn on every click / tap that we make. You hit ‘Like’, ‘Comment’, ‘Share’ or even post something on your Wall, change
your status for that matter, and dollars go in Facebook pocket. There is an
alarming trend in Pakistan to share almost every single post that users see on their
screen. People mostly like to share something good, so-called religious. Have you
ever tried to verify anything before sharing? Answer is “NO”. While
one is getting his life in hereafter busted by sharing unconfirmed and fake ‘Ahadee’
or fake savings of ‘Khulfa-e-Rashideen’. He is also making someone else
wealthier. I urge our youth to put a complete stop on sharing anything fancy
that is made through good graphics with flowers, beautiful background and have
a fake Hadees on it. Do not get deceived by presentations, it is a farce. Save yourself
rom unnecessarily becoming a part of this well-designed distortion campaign against
true Islam.
It is absolutely not safe to
post your personal and family pictures on Facebook. Please do not think that
once you delete something from Facebook it stands deleted from their servers as
well. Nothing is in your hand once it gets uploaded. So, our young boys and
girls should be extra careful doing such activity there are artificial
intelligence crawlers doing such activity. They would find out every trend that
you follow and should very cleverly guide you towards what you want to see and
do. Do not put more information about yourself on the Facebook or any other
social media platform; this information is your privacy, do no abandon it. ‘Strangers’
can stalk you and get your private information. It is highly recommended not to
share your personal information publicly.
The fact remains that the
Facebook is addicting and habit-forming just like smoking. Its uncontrolled use
would reduce your productivity as a student or a worker. It will keep your mind
occupied with stuff that is not really important for you. Going further, there
are fake profiles and IDs. Now it is easier to create fake profiles using
stolen pictures. People often use bogus (Fake) profile to insult or harass
someone they don’t like. Girls are the most vulnerable to these activities. There
have been numerous news stories about people, normally students, who became
depressed or even suicidal after being harassed on Facebook.
On a positive note being social
is great, but at least we should know who is at the other side of the wire. Sharing
is your own, well though about views is wonderful, but sharing non-verified
stuff from a person whom you do not really well, or from an unknown origin is
senselessness, which can make us pay later. So, do ‘think before acting’ and
you will have no problems on social media at all. Signing off.
